New Jersey parenting class requirement
Court run, before judgment
New Jersey orders every person who files for divorce, nullity, or separate maintenance where custody, visitation, or support of a minor child is at issue into the Parents' Education Program, completed before judgment. Each party attends separate sessions.
The requirement at a glance
| Who must attend | Every person who files an action for divorce, nullity, or separate maintenance where the custody, visitation, or support of a minor child is an issue. Each party attends separate sessions. |
| Hours required | Not set by statute |
| Deadline | No day count. The court requires all parties to complete the program before judgment is entered. |
| Authority | N.J.S.A. 2A:34-12.5 |
| Fees and waivers | A flat $25 registration fee set by statute. No sliding scale in the Act. |
| Our price | $25 per case. Held at this state's statutory maximum. Scholarship seats are funded by donors, so no parent is turned away for money. |
| Our registry status | Planned for a later filing wave. Our acceptance guarantee applies wherever your court accepts an outside online provider. |
What the law actually says
“Failure of a party to participate in the program shall be considered as a factor by the court in making any custody and visitation determinations.”
N.J.S.A. 2A:34-12.5(c)Quoted from the official text. Read it yourself at the source below. The part nobody explains
Filing your certificate
Nothing on your part. The program is administered by the Administrative Office of the Courts and attendance is tracked internally through county program representatives. The registration fee is forwarded by the Clerk of the Superior Court.
If the deadline passes
Failure to participate is considered by the court as a factor in making custody and visitation determinations.
Who approves providers in New Jersey
There is no provider approval pathway in New Jersey. The Parents' Education Program is administered by the Administrative Office of the Courts and delivered by county program representatives appointed by the Assignment Judge, which is to say judiciary staff rather than vendors. Entry would require a change to the Supreme Court rules. We list New Jersey honestly as closed.
