Nebraska parenting class requirement

Ordered in every Parenting Act case

Nebraska courts order all parties to a Parenting Act proceeding into a basic level parenting education course, approved statewide by the State Court Administrator. Self-paced online delivery is expressly allowed at the basic level. Our application is being prepared.

On the filing list

The requirement at a glance

Who must attendAll parties to a proceeding under the Parenting Act, on the court's order. A second-level course may be ordered on top of the basic one where screening or a factual determination identifies child abuse or neglect, domestic intimate partner abuse, or unresolved parental conflict. The Act does not reach county attorney paternity and support actions.
Hours required2 to 6 hours, basic level
DeadlineThe Parenting Act sets none, and district courts set their own by local rule, so they differ sharply. Douglas County requires you to register with Conciliation within ten days of filing or service and finish within thirty days of registering. The Eleventh District allows sixty days from the complaint. The Second District wants registration within fifteen days of the progression order. Read your own order.
AuthorityNeb. Rev. Stat. 43-2928
Fees and waiversNo fee cap and no required sliding scale, although a provider must disclose whether it offers one. Written proof of completion must be provided at no additional cost, which ours always is.
Our price$25 for one parent, $50 for both parents on the same case. Scholarship seats are funded by donors, so no parent is turned away for money.

What the law actually says

“The court shall order all parties to a proceeding under the Parenting Act to attend a basic level parenting education course.”

The part nobody explains

Filing your certificate

You file Nebraska State Court Form DC 6:5.5 in your district court case and attach the provider's proof of completion to it. Our certificate is built as a one-page exhibit for exactly that purpose, and our completion email tells you about the form so it does not get missed.

If the deadline passes

Failure to participate cannot delay entry of a final judgment by more than six months, and can never be punished by jail. Districts gate other things instead: the Second District will not schedule a temporary order hearing without proof of completion, and Douglas County will not set a trial date.

Who approves providers in Nebraska

The State Court Administrator approves all parenting education courses, administered through the Office of Dispute Resolution. Approvals run one calendar year, so this is an annual filing rather than a multi-year one. Self-paced online delivery is expressly permitted at the basic level and expressly prohibited for the second level. Our basic level application is being prepared.

Honesty policy. This page reflects our live approval registry, and it is written to be checked. We do not claim an approval we do not hold, we tell you when a rule is set locally rather than statewide, and we label a summary as a summary instead of dressing it up as a quotation. If your court will not accept this certificate, we refund you in full. Nothing here is legal advice; your own order and your county's rules control.
